Spring and Autumn versions because I couldn’t decide and then realized it should be both. Though, in reality by the time the leaves turn the moths have died and the caterpillars will overwinter in their cocoons among the leaf litter.

I moved to Kentucky in July of 2003. I was seventeen. We drove cross country from California in my uncle’s semi. It wasn’t an easy trip. I hadn’t seen much of the country and truck stops don’t show the best of it. When we finally arrived I was awestruck at the narrow road to my parents’ new home that wound between hills and under trees so vibrantly green they didn’t look real. I admit that even at my age, I looked for fairies. When we got to the house I wasn’t prepared for the onslaught of Kentucky insects. The house filled with them as we unloaded our things. I didn’t know if I could sleep and I stepped outside to cry. I was first startled by the intense blackness. Then my eyes noticed the sky and stars like I’d never seen them. I wiped my eyes and knew this is where I belonged and it would all be ok. Another evening that summer when my sister and I were taking in the sky a Luna moth landed on the door. Not being native to California we had never seen one before. I was enchanted. What a magical place we had ended up in. This was a wild place and I was home.

This spring, 2026, my children found a tattered luna moth. They picked it up, thinking it was already dead, wanting to save it from our curious dogs. They brought it inside and to our astonishment, she laid eggs. We carefully watched over the eggs and researched their needs. They prefer sweet gum trees and we thankfully had one growing nearby. When the first caterpillar hatched we used a paintbrush to move it onto a leaf of the tree. It crawled away and, I hope, is growing nice and fat.

I have felt tattered and at forty, like most of you, have lived through sorrows and difficulties. And yet, I can still bring forth new life. We can live so many lives and it’s up to us when we want to start the next one. In this next life I’m an artist. I suppose I’ve always been one, but I’m accepting the title now and sharing my art with you. I’m so glad you’re here and stayed to share this moment with me. I’d love to know more about you and the lives you’ve lived and will live. Write to me if you’d like. I love letters. I’ll probably write you back. PO Box 23, Columbia, KY 42728.

Product features

- Printed with archival inks for vibrant, smooth color reproduction

- Textured 285gsm watercolor paper with premium matte finish

- Slight size tolerance (+/- 1/16") due to production process

Care instructions

- If the poster does gather any dust, you may wipe it off gently with a clean, dry cloth.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1000/0767/4225/files/20260612233558-1f166b77-720e-6a30-844e-9a943a19d046.jpg?v=1781308448
https://jennredford.com/products/tethered-no-4-luna-moths-among-tree-branches-farmhouse-antique-crock-botanical-watercolor-gouache-fine-art-print
